Etymology

Most likely reflects an earlier *xolsъ, from the same root as reduplicated Proto-Slavic *xolxolъ (whence Czech chlácholiti (to calm)), derived with the suffix *-sъ found also in Proto-Slavic *golsъ (voice) : *golgolъ (utterance) or in Lithuanian gar̃sas (sound) : Proto-Slavic *gorgora (gargling).
