[edit]Most likely reflects an earlier *xolsъ, from the same root as reduplicated Proto-Slavic *xolxolъ (whence Czech chlácholiti (“to calm”)), derived with the suffix *-sъ found also in Proto-Slavic *golsъ (“voice”) : *golgolъ (“utterance”) or in Lithuanian gar̃sas (“sound”) : Proto-Slavic *gorgora (“gargling”).
