From Proto-Permic *ośkᴕ̈l, from Proto-Uralic *aśkele. Cognates include Eastern Mari ошкыл (oškyl) and Finnish askel.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian воськов (vośkov) and Komi-Permyak оськӧв (ośköv).
