Inherited from Old Ruthenian ꙋпомина́ти (upomináti), from Old East Slavic ꙋпоминати (upominati). By surface analysis, у- (u-) +‎ помина́ти (pomynáty). Sense 3 likely arose under the influence of Russian упомина́ть (upominátʹ).
