Derived from уда́ться (udátʹsja), and then у- (u-) +‎ дать (datʹ). Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dati, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *dṓˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *dédeh₃ti (to give), whence English donate, date and data.
