From у́голь (úgolʹ, coal) +‎ -е- (-e-) +‎ -род (-rod), combining form of роди́ть (rodítʹ, to give birth), because coal consists primarily of carbon. Modeled on кислоро́д (kisloród), водоро́д (vodoród).
