[edit]From у́голь (úgolʹ, “coal”) + -е- (-e-) + -род (-rod), combining form of роди́ть (rodítʹ, “to give birth”), because coal consists primarily of carbon. Modeled on кислоро́д (kisloród), водоро́д (vodoród).
