[edit]From Proto-Turkic *toŋ- (“to freeze, congeal”).[1]
Cognate with Kazakh тоңу (toñu), Kyrgyz тоңуу (toŋuu), Southern Altai тоҥор (toŋor), Shor тоң-, Uzbek to'ngmoq, Uyghur توڭماق (tongmaq), Azerbaijani donmaq, Turkish donmak, Khakas тоорға (toorğa), Tuvan доңар (doñar), Yakut тоҥ (toñ, “to freeze”).
