From *tayaq (stick; cane), from Proto-Turkic *daja- (prop, support; lean against).

Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (tajaq, stick, cane); Tatar таяк (tayak), Kazakh таяқ (taäq), Kyrgyz таяк (tayak), Southern Altai таяк (tayak), Uzbek tayoq, Crimean Tatar tayaq (stick), etc.
