[edit]Uncertain. Vasmer discounts various proposed Mari, Tatar, and Sanskrit etymons as reversing the direction of borrowing or unbelievable. Perhaps cognate with тарата́йка (taratájka, “gig”). Not cognate with таранти́ть (tarantítʹ, “to chatter”).
