From *tayğaq "slippery", from Proto-Turkic *tāy- (to slide).

Cognate with Kazakh тайғақ (taiğaq), Kyrgyz тайгак (taygak), Southern Altai тайгак (taygak), Uzbek toygʻoq, Uyghur تايغاق (tayghaq, slippery), Tuvan тайгак (taygak, slippery place).
