[edit]From Proto-Selkup *taŋǝ, from Proto-Samoyedic *tǝŋǝ, from Proto-Uralic *suŋe.
Related to Finnish suvi. Cognates include Nganasan тәӈәә (təŋəə), Northern Selkup таӈы (taŋy) and Tundra Nenets таʼ (tah).
