[edit]From Middle Mongol *čečen (“wise, clever”), from Proto-Mongolic *secen (“wise, clever”), compare Mongolian цэцэн (cecen, “wise, clever, shrewd; precise, well-aimed”).
Cognate with Kazakh шешен (şeşen, “orator”), Kyrgyz чечен (cecen, “eloquent; orator”), Southern Altai чечен (čečen, “eloquent; orator”), Uyghur چېچەن (chëchen, “eloquent; orator”), Khakas чиченъ (çiçenʺ, “sharp-shooter; well-aimed”), etc.
