From сім'я́ (simʺjá), сім' (simʺ) +‎ -я́ (-já) +‎ -яни́н (-janýn). Compare Russian семьяни́н (semʹjanín), Belarusian сем’яні́н (sjemʺjanín). Inherited from Old East Slavic сѣмиꙗ (sěmija, family, household; husband, wife), from Proto-Slavic *sěmьja.
