[edit]Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سونگر (süñger, “sponge”) (whence Turkish sünger), a reflex of Byzantine Greek σφουγγάριον (sphoungárion). Distantly akin to native Bulgarian гъ́ба (gǎ́ba, “fungus”).
