Etymology

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سونگر (süñger, sponge) (whence Turkish sünger), a reflex of Byzantine Greek σφουγγάριον (sphoungárion). Distantly akin to native Bulgarian гъ́ба (gǎ́ba, fungus).
