From Proto-Permic *śɔ̈läm, from Proto-Uralic *śüdäme. Cognates include Northern Mansi сым (sym) and Finnish sydän.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian сьӧлӧм (śölöm) and Udmurt сюлэм (śulem).
