From Proto-Turkic *sɨŕ- (to ooze, to melt). Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (sızmāk, to drip, melt, lose weight), Azerbaijani sızmaq (to leak), Chagatai [script needed] (sızmak, to drip, ooze), Chuvash шӑранма (šăranma, to melt, lose weight), Kipchak [Arabic needed] (sız-, to melt), Kyrgyz сызуу (sızuu, to ooze, trickle), Tatar сызу (sızu, to melt), Turkmen syzmak (to ooze), Tuvan сыскаар (sıskaar, to strain, filter), Uzbek sizmoq (to ooze).
