[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sъsьlъ, of uncertain further origin. Possibly onomatopoeic (cf. съ́скам (sǎ́skam, “to hiss”)) or from the root of dialectal со́вам (sóvam, “to shove, to thrust”).
