From English strike + ball, likely modeled on пейнтбо́л (pejntból, paintball); coined by early Russian airsoft players circa 1997 and quickly adopted because Cyrillic transliterations of English airsoft (эйрсо́фт (ejrsóft) and аирсо́фт (airsóft)) are awkward for Russian speakers to pronounce.
