Bulgarian

Etymology

[edit]

Supposed to be a dialectal action noun of Bulgarian стягам (stjagam, to tighten, to lace).

As root structure, resembles Polish ścieg (stitch), Czech steh (stitch), Old Church Slavonic остегъ (ostegŭ, zip, fastener (of cloths)) and Russian застёжка (zastjóžka, fastener, clasp, buckle). If related, the Bulgarian term should represent a vṛddhi-construction, which is doubtful.
