First attested in c. 1280‒1300. Inherited from Proto-Slavic *solvъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *salˀwas, from Proto-Indo-European *solH-wos, from *solH-. Cognate with Old East Slavic соловъ (solovŭ), Old Ruthenian соло́вый (solóvyj).
