[edit]Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *sъmuliti (“to crunch; to silt, to sludge”) + -ец (-ec) (compare Russian му́лить (múlitʹ, “to grind, to munch”)) or a variant of dialectal смоле́ц (smoléc, “moth, maggot”) with reduction of unaccented -о- > -у-.
