[edit]Borrowed from Romanian slăvină, probably of Slavic origin, ultimately equivalent to Proto-Slavic *slavь (“stopple”) + -ина (-ina) (which is perhaps akin to Lithuanian šlúoti (“to sweep”)). Skok (in reference to the Croatian cognate) derives it from Vulgar Latin lavāre (“to wash”).
