Inherited from Proto-Slavic *skrebrъ (curly, vining), seemingly limited to South Slavic. Akin to *skreba (a-stem) (whence Macedonian скреба (skreba)), *skrebǫtъ / *skrobǫtъ (nt-stem) (from the later is Slovene skrobọ̑t, Serbo-Croatian скро̏бӯт) and possibly further to Lithuanian skruõbti (to excavate), skrúoblas (hornbeam), Latvian skābardis (hornbeam).
