Bulgarian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *skrebrъ (“curly, vining”), seemingly limited to South Slavic. Akin to *skreba (a-stem) (whence Macedonian скреба (skreba)), *skrebǫtъ / *skrobǫtъ (nt-stem) (from the later is Slovene skrobọ̑t, Serbo-Croatian скро̏бӯт) and possibly further to Lithuanian skruõbti (“to excavate”), skrúoblas (“hornbeam”), Latvian skābardis (“hornbeam”).
