Pannonian Rusyn
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- сяти (sjati) — colloquial
- шяти (šjati) — obsolete
Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Carpathian Rusyn святы́й (svjatŷ́j) or earlier Old Ruthenian свѧтый (svjatyj), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *svętъ. Retention in Pannonian Rusyn likely due to biblical influence from Ukrainian святи́й (svjatýj). Displaced швети (šveti), from Old Slovak svätý, whose root only survives in швето (šveto).
