[edit]Etymology
[edit]свръх- (svrǎh-, “super-, over-”) + я́кане (jákane, verbal noun of я́кам (jákam, “to pronounce yat as я (ja)”)).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]свръхя́кане • (svrǎhjákane) n
Usage notes
[edit]- The word is used to describe a pronunciation and spelling error that occurs when words that were formerly written using the letter yat (ѣ) are incorrectly declined. Words such as цял (cjal, “whole”) were once written цѣл, with pronunciation differing across dialects. In Western dialects, this would be rendered as an /ɛ/ sound, whereas in Eastern ones and the literary language, it took on the form of a palatised а, namely /ja/ or /ʲa/, this sound being equivalent to that of the letter ya (я).
- The error arises because the root of lemmas like цял decline to цел- in derived forms, e.g. целия (celija, “the whole”). Where the speaker or writer fails to mutate the я to an е in declined forms, the instance of 'superyatification' is considered to have occurred.
