Etymology
[edit]From сау (sau, “health, healthy”) + бол (bol, “be”). In meaning "bless you" (after sneeze) is a Calque of Russian будь здоров (budʹ zdorov, “be healthy”). Native phrases mostly are used with theonyms or something religious e.g. жәрекімалда (järekımalda) (жәрекімалла (järekımalla)), from يرحمك الله (“Yarhamuk Allāh”), бер Тәңір (ber Täñır) etc.
In western dialect also means "thank you".Cognate with Turkish sağ ol (“thank you”), Crimean Tatar sağ ol (“thank you”), Kumyk савбол (sawbol, “thank you; goodbye”), Azerbaijani sağ ol (“thank you”), etc.
