From *saq-čï (guard, watchman), from Proto-Turkic *sak (aware; to protect).

Cognate with Kazakh сақшы (saqşy, guard), Bashkir һаҡсы (haqsı), Tatar сакчы (saqçı), Kumyk сакъчы (saqçı), Uzbek soqchi (guard, watchman), etc.
