Etymology

[edit]

Cognate to Ukrainian росторо́пша (rostorópša), расторо́пша (rastorópša), розтро́пта (roztrópta), розторо́пша (roztorópša), Belarusian растаро́пша (rastarópša, milk thistle), and Ukrainian росто́паш (rostópaš), ростопаст (rostopast), ростокащ (rostokašč), росто́хвасть (rostóxvastʹ), ростропаск (rostropask, greater celandine, Chelidonium majus).

Old Polish ostropest (milk thistle) is a borrowing from Old Czech ostropezd (cotton thistle), while Slovene ostropes, ostropec (milk thistle) is probably from Slovak ostropes, ostropestrec.

The original compound is uncertain.
