Etymology

From archaic пійти́ (pijtý), inherited from Old Ruthenian *пуйти́ (*pujtí) (compare Carpathian Rusyn пуйти́ (pujtý)) < *пѡйти́ (*pôjtí) < пойти́ (pojtí), from Old East Slavic поити (poiti), from Proto-Slavic *pojьti. Cognates with Russian пойти́ (pojtí).
