From Proto-Samic *poarēvē.

Related to Finnish parvi, Northern Khanty пөр (pør, raft) and Tundra Nenets [script needed] (pārī). Cognates include Akkala Sami пуэррев (puerr’ev), Skolt Sami puäʹrrev, and Ter Sami поаррев (poârrʼev).
