[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic пуща (pušča, “desolate place”), from Proto-Slavic *puťa, *pušča from *pȗstъ (“desolate”) (compare пусто́й (pustój)). Cognate with Polish puszcza, Ukrainian пу́ща (púšča), Belarusian пу́шча (púšča).
