[edit]From Proto-Slavic *pugavъ/*pǫgavъ, probably borrowed from Russian. Morphologically equivalent to пуг (pug, “thrust, prod”) (dated) + -ав (-av). Further akin to Old Church Slavonic пѫгꙑ (pǫgy, “metal button”).
