From Old Church Slavonic прѣгꙑн҄и (prěgynʹi), reflecting Proto-Slavic *pergyni. Probably akin to Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌲𐌿𐌽𐌹 (fairguni, mountain).
