Etymology

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic православьнъ (pravoslavĭnŭ), in turn a calque of Ancient Greek ὀρθόδοξος (orthódoxos).[1] By surface analysis, пра́вый (právyj, right, correct) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ сла́ва (sláva, glory, glorification; (general) opinion) +‎ -ный (-nyj).
