Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic попьрати (popĭrati), composed as if from по- (po-) +‎ прать (pratʹ, to crush, to stomp; to go against, to resist), from Proto-Slavic *pьrati; cognate with попере́ть (poperétʹ).
