[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic попьрати (popĭrati), composed as if from по- (po-) + прать (pratʹ, “to crush, to stomp; to go against, to resist”), from Proto-Slavic *pьrati; cognate with попере́ть (poperétʹ).
