From Proto-Slavic *ploska (flat surface), *plosky (flat vessel), akin to or borrowed from Proto-Germanic *flaskǭ (flask). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian пло̏ска (flat jug); Czech ploska (sole), Slovak ploska (sole); dialectal Russian пло́ска (plóska, type of flask), Ukrainian пло́ска (plóska, flat bottle). Loaned into Romanian ploscă (flat jug). Historically also attested as y-stem: Old Church Slavonic плосква (ploskva), Old East Slavic плосковъ (ploskovŭ).
