[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain, Yegorov suggests an inheritance from Proto-Turkic *bẹ̄ĺčik (“cradle”),[1] however this causes a phonological problem as that would have yielded something akin to пеҫӗ (peś̬ĕ). Due to this, Fedotov instead suggests a derivation from Proto-Turkic *bēle- (“to swaddle”) comparing Tatar биләүсә (biläwsä, “diaper”) from биләргә (bilärgä, “to swaddle”).[2] Róna-Tas also states that the variations in phonology may be due to both *bẹ̄ĺčik and *bēle- influencing eachother over time.[3]
Noun
[edit]пелче • (pelč̬e) (plural пелчесем)
