Pronunciation

Noun

[edit]

олмэнч (olmenč) (plural олма, о̄ллмэ)

  1. person
  2. human
    • 2021, A. M. Sapelnikova, “Та̄л А̄ка”, in Голос Севера (приложение) [Voice of the North (appendix)], St Petersburg: Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, page 275:
      Коаввьнэнҍ со̄н о̄ллмэ, пыххьтэнҍ пэ̄ҏҏьтэ.
      Kåvv’nen’ sōn ōllme, pyxx’ten’ pēr̥r̥’te.
      Humans found it, took home.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The historical plural form of the word is олма, and like other words ending with -нч, the plural form can be used as alternative singular (eg. То̄нн ля̄к шӣг олма (= олмэнч) ‘You are a good person’)
  • It's unclear where does the plural form (and therefore form of the stem) о̄ллмэ comes from. The "historical" plural form олма nowadays seems to be used exclusively as a plural nominative.
