Etymology

Colloquialized pronunciation of an earlier холево (holevo) (attested in dialectal Greek borrowings), from Proto-Slavic *xoľevo (“bandage, cover”).

In the modern language, the sense “sock, stocking” has been overtaken by the Turkish borrowing чора́п (čoráp).
