[edit]From об- (ob-) and Proto-Slavic *jęti (“to take”). Compare German Umfang (“extent, scope”) from umfangen (“to embrace, to include”), which is regarded as a calque of Latin circumferentia from Greek περιφέρεια (periféreia).
