[edit]Borrowed from either German Obelisk or French obélisque, from Latin obeliscus, from Ancient Greek ὀβελίσκος (obelískos), from ὀβελός (obelós, “spit, skewer”).[1] Compare Russian обели́ск (obelísk), Belarusian абелі́ск (abjelísk).
