[edit]From народ (narod, “people, nation”) + -о- (-o-) + вла́да (vláda, “(political) power, dominion”) + -я (-ja), a calque of Ancient Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratía). Compare демокра́тія (demokrátija), a borrowing from Ancient Greek.
