[edit]Probably from на- (na-) + мол (mol, “cavity”). Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary tentatively also compares Serbo-Croatian му̑љ (“silt”), Ukrainian мул (mul, “mud”), Polish muł (“silt”), however, notes that the vocalism of these forms does not match the vocalism of the Bulgarian lemma.
