[edit]According to BER, a blend of наво́ище (navóište, “something wrapped around”) + обу́ща pl (obúšta, “footwear”). Formally may reflect the plural of hypothetical Proto-Slavic *navuťe n (“footwear”), from *na- + *uti (“to put on”).
