Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic мерзлꙑй (merzlyj), from Proto-Slavic *mьrzlъ. Constructed as мёрз(нуть) (mjórz(nutʹ)) +‎ -лый (-lyj).

Pronunciation

[edit]

Adjective

[edit]

мёрзлый (mjórzlyj)

  1. frozen, congealed

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Short forms мёрзл, мёрзла, мёрзло, мёрзлы theoretically exist, but are usually avoided due to their similarity to past-tense forms of мёрзнуть (mjórznutʹ) (compare мёрзла (mjórzla, she froze), neuter мёрзло (mjórzlo)).
