[edit]From Proto-Slavic *mỳšь (“mouse”) (referring to the mouse-like appearance of a flexing muscle), from Proto-Indo-European *muh₂s. For semantic development, compare to Latin mūsculus (“muscle”, literally “little mouse”) and Ancient Greek μῦς (mûs, “mouse; muscle”).
