Etymology
[edit]Ultimately from Ancient Greek μοναστήριον (monastḗrion, “hermit's cell”), from μόνος (mónos, “alone”). Compare Russian монасты́рь (monastýrʹ), Belarusian манасты́р (manastýr), Polish monaster.
