Probably related to Proto-Mongolic *möndele, from which Mongolian мөндөл (möndöl, young marmot, tarbagan) also originates.

Compare also Evenki мундука̄н (mundukān), Even му̇нру̇ӄан (mu̇nru̇qan), Chukchi мэлоталгын (melotalɣən) and Itelmen мињԓ (miňɬ).
