Inherited from Old Slovak myš, from Proto-Slavic *myšь. Feminine noun ending (-a) possibly appended in accordance with grammatical gender, or a back-formation from the plural form. Cognates include Slovak myš and Carpathian Rusyn мыш (mŷš).
