Arabic ماقاي
Cyrillic мақай
Latin maqai

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown (but recorded in dictionaries). Possibly from Proto-Iranian *makayah (apian), via Persian [script needed] (*makay). Compare with Proto-Slavic *mečьka (she-bear, little bear) from Proto-Indo-European *meke- (bee). Related and more popular form мақат (maqat, male bear) seems reflects substantive adjective: *makatah (apian), via Persian [script needed] (*makat).
