Etymology
[edit]Unknown (but recorded in dictionaries). Possibly from Proto-Iranian *makayah (“apian”), via Persian [script needed] (*makay). Compare with Proto-Slavic *mečьka (“she-bear, little bear”) from Proto-Indo-European *meke- (“bee”). Related and more popular form мақат (maqat, “male bear”) seems reflects substantive adjective: *makatah (“apian”), via Persian [script needed] (*makat).
