Probably from a Uralic language, like Proto-Mansi *mē̮ŋ-ońt (earth-horn) (compare Northern Mansi ма̄ (, earth), а̄ньт (ānʹt, horn)) or Khanty. Compare Proto-Uralic *mëxe (earth).
